Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! is a band that has always gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to reception. I think it’s due to their band name. Yes, it’s silly and it’s longer than usual, but it’s a Goonies reference, and that’s badass.
Anyway, the French quintet are back with their third album Get Lost, Find Yourself, bringing their brand of “easycore” music back into the scene. Going back to what I was saying before, I feel like people are generally way too hard on these guys. They make fun music, plain and simple. The songs on this album are more or less the same, but they flow together very well and give you that feeling that Warped Tour is right around the corner. I will say, however, that there is a great deal of variation on this release in comparison to the past two CNCC albums.
Guitar feedback rings through the speakers, building tension until the full band kicks in and starts off the album with “Playing Dead”. This same energy is maintained throughout “City Of Light”. The tone of the band’s usual sound starts to change with the third track, “The Other Line”. CNCC bring forth a VERY post-hardcore sound in this particular song, and it’s a fantastic fit for these guys. I like the easycore style, but if these guys ever did more tracks like this in the future, I wouldn’t be complaining.
“Set It Straight” brings us back into pop-punk territory, while “Pull You Under” ushers in the only truly heavy track on the album. This is a major difference from previous albums, since a few of these metalcore pieces are usually included. “What Goes Around” brings the tempo down slightly, edging more towards alt-rock territory. “Worst Case Scenario” is a track that a band like A Day To Remember would envy. Track eight, “Twist The Knife”, will surely become a staple in their live set as it’s impossible not to envision a massive circle pit during the course of the three and a half minute song.
The title track of the album is where things get interesting. Now, the band has only released one acoustic song in the past (“For All We Know”, off of their debut Something For Nothing). But this acoustic rendition is drastically different from anything that the band has ever released. If the band were to play “For All We Know” with a full-band set up, it would sound like a standard pop-punk song. With “Get Lost, Find Yourself”, the arrangement would probably be a far cry from anything that they’ve recorded. It’s a standout song.
Get Lost, Find Yourself finishes with the very upbeat, inspirational anthem “Every Moment”. It closes things on a perfect note, and it marks the finest record Chunk! No Captain Chunk! have released thus far as a collective.
