Vena Cava - Somewhere in Lebanon, Ohio, post-hardcore-turned-EDM prodigy Noah Koroman is already impressively making a name for himself in the electronic music world with his project, Vena Cava. I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Noah recently, which you can check out below.
1) I read that you were in a post-hardcore band before you began making electronic music and began Vena Cava. What was the band you were previously in?
Well before I started Vena Cava I was doing a project called Cycles, the project didn't really pick up much, and I started to lose interest when I picked up the whole EDM thing. But I've still had my good share of post hardcore bands and other projects over the past few years.
2) Where do you take inspiration from musically? Clearly post-hardcore and electronica are in there, but anywhere else?
I have a big influence from various pop artists, as well as poprock and post hardcore producers. Another factor that plays into my influence tends to be my love for graphic design and CGI work.
3) How did Vena Cava begin exactly? Tell me a little about the process of it coming to where it is today.
Well I was in my band at the time, and it was during the beginning of the whole dubstep explosion in popularity, I heard a few rock bands I liked at the time use some EDM concepts in their music, so it really influenced me to attempt to start producing other styles of music besides just rock.
4) Your music reminds me a lot of artists like Skrillex, Knife Party, and Porter Robinson. Not only in the sound and vibe, but in the technicality. What are some particular characteristics you try to accentuate and make stand out in your music?
I really attempt to let the melodic aspects of my music stand out, as well as the little things that can surprise people such as break down sections that vary from the rest of the song.
5) What is your studio set up like? Software/hardware of choice for recording, mixing and mastering tracks? Same question goes for live music.
My studio mostly just consists of my laptop and headphones.. I use ableton live as my DAW as well. I mean, I do have monitors and other hardware, but I mostly use headphones and my laptop. As far as my live set up goes, I usually use a novation twitch and two launch pads running ableton live.. But sometimes I use my twitch with traktor, but it all depends on what kind of set I am doing.
6) Tell me a little about the way you create a song like "X". Do you have a specific process for creating your tracks, or does it change a little every time?
It all really depends on the base inspiration behind the song I am working on. It could take from 3 hours to push something out to 3 months. It all depends on how I am feeling and how inspired I am at the time.
7) This is a question I ask every artist, because I always get a wide variety of answers. What kind of message would you like fans to walk away with after listening to your music?
I really just want to connect on an emotional basis with my fans with the music I put out.
8) What are your future plans for Vena Cava? (new album, tours, etc.?)
As far as my plans go for the future, I am currently working on a few new singles and remixes that I will be putting out over the course of the next few months.
