Blink-182 bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus and All Time Low guitarist/vocalist Alex Gaskarth made a surprise announcement this morning, unveiling that they have been working on a brand new project called Simple Creatures. Gaskarth made the following announcement via Instagram this morning:

Hey everybody! You might be wondering just what in the hell is going on with my socials right now. Well, my good friend @markhoppus and I have been quietly making music together for a little while now and we’re finally ready to share it with ya. We’re calling this baby @simplecreatures and we’d like to invite you to join us for the ride. Our first song “Drug” will officially be out everywhere you can hear music when the clock hits midnight your local time. Go check out SIMPLECREATURESMUSIC DOT COME to hear it right fahkin’ now tho !! #simplecreatures”.

The band’s first new track, “Drug”, was co-written and produced with Zakk Cervini (All Time Low, Blink-182, 5 Seconds of Summer, Yungblud). In an interview with Kerrang!, Hoppus stated the following in regards to the song:

“‘Drug’ is always the first song we play people when introducing them to Simple Creatures, so it only makes sense that it’s the first single. I love the ratty guitar lead mixed with the thumping kick drum. Lyrically, the song is about being destroyed by the things you love.”

In the same interview, Gaskarth added: “‘Drug’ is a song about someone or something you want the most, being terrible for you….Feels great until it doesn’t, but then you can’t stop. In the studio it felt immediately like it was the song that best defined Simple Creatures; it’s gritty, grimy, rooted in the musicality we both came up on, but with a twist that takes it away from anything we’ve worked on before.”

The band’s debut EP will be released this March, with more details to come. Check out the debut single, “Drug”, below.
