Yesterday evening, music producer Getter (aka Tanner Petulla) announced that he would be abruptly ending his current tour in support of his Visceral album. Petulla made the announcement off the heels of a run of shows that he claims featured fans yelling, booing, and throwing things at him during the performances. The full statement reads as follows:

“I started the Visceral project to move forward with not only my career but my mental state. I thought this tour was an effort to make myself happy and prove to everybody that music is more than just raging on a weekend.

Imagine working toward something, putting in all your effort, time, and money into something that you feel could FINALLY separate you from the rest and show you DO have purpose. All to just get yelled at, booed and have shit thrown at you because it’s not the cookie-cutter bullshit they are used to. Criticism is healthy. My friends and I frequently critique each other’s work and it helps the final product. However, the constant hate and the disgusting attitudes I’m faced with are destroying me.

To all my actual fans who have supported me and helped me through this bullshit, I love you and I’m so fuckin sorry i have to do this.

I am not happy anymore

I am canceling the rest of the tour

I need to make myself happy

I can’t do this shit man”

Shortly after, Getter released another tweet that simply read, “This is my last tour. Over it.”

We truly hope that Getter takes the time that he needs and comes back into music. Over the course of history, almost every artist has tried to change up their sound and evolve. It’s called growth, and it’s completely natural for anyone whose an artist to go through it, but not without some growing pains. Hell, if anyone needs a refresher on this, Bob Dylan got booed off the stage once he brought an electric guitar into his sets. Yet, he’s still lauded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time (he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016).

Every artist faces backlash when they change up their sound, even in the slightest. It’s a hard road to navigate, particularly when you don’t get the response you want right off the bat. Considering that Visceral is a daring step forward in the producer’s career, and one that’s produced some of his most creatively challenging and beautifully constructed songs to date, we hope that this isn’t the end.
