Metalcore act The Devil Wears Prada have unveiled what may be considered their most experimental piece to date. From the band’s upcoming studio album, The Act comes “Please Say No”, a three-minute track that features soothing cleans, powerfully emotive screams and soft electronically-tinged elements that permeate its backdrop. Without the vocals, it almost sounds like it could be something straight out of a Lynch-Esque horror film.
In a press release, vocalist Mike Hranica stated the song is about a scene within the novel Never Come Morning by author Nelson Algren. Hranica states:
"This song is more difficult to explain than any other set of lyrics I’ve assembled. Saying the song is derivative of class injustice is insufficient and saying the song is born of a violent crime is cheap. Lyrically, I’d urge interested listeners to read the book. Musically, I’ll encourage listeners to enjoy what I consider to be our moodiest effort on The Act.”
Regarding the actual album, Hranica elaborates more:
”The Act is our seventh full-length and the most detailed effort of our career. The process was scrupulous in every facet. Jon, who’s played keyboard with the band for the last seven or eight years, produced the album; which is a decision that’s insurmountably snowballed over the past few releases. There is no common theme surrounding every song of the record, although there are notions that inhale and exhale through the LP’s timeline.”
