Taking a page out of Taylor Swift’s book, Florida-based pop-punk act Mayday Parade recently embarked on their own version of an “Eras” tour, which they’ve dubbed the “Three Cheers For Twenty Years” tour, a play on the name of one of their early hits “Three Cheers For Five Years”. The tour stopped at San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom last week, with the five-piece band playing to a packed house as they pulled songs out of their catalog from the last twenty years, dating all the way back to their first EP, Tales Told By Dead Friends. It was a celebration for the diehard Mayday Parade fans, who sang along to every word as the band powered through an eclectic catalog.
The show was opened with a hometown performance from up-and-coming pop-punk act Like Roses, before Grayscale took the stage for a high-energy opening performance. Main support was provided by Microwave, who brought forth an incredibly enjoyable show that ended up being the perfect segue into Mayday Parade’s set.
Other than opening with a song called “By The Way”, from the band’s most recent effort, Sweet, the band played a lengthy set starting all the way back in 2005 with the release of the Tales Told By Dead Friends EP, going in order (A Lesson In Romantics, Anywhere But Here, even the Valdosta EP made an appearance!) until closing out with songs from “Sweet”. The biggest hits of the night always come with singalong tracks like “Oh Well, Oh Well (from the self-titled record), “Miserable At Best” (which features lead singer Derek Sanders stepping behind the piano), and of course, “Jamie All Over”. There’s still nothing quite like hearing the lines “I had a dream last night, we drove out to see Las Vegas”, and watching a crowd go nuts.
Twenty years in, Mayday Parade are at the top of their game, and they performed one of the best sets I’ve seen them play in years.
