Last night, superstar and former Los Angeles Lakers championship winner Shaquille O’Neal brought his epic “Shaq Bass All Stars” event to Heart Health Park in Sacramento. Officially dubbing the city “Shaqracmento”, the former NBA center brought forth a night of epic bass and dubstep music, thrilling a packed field of dance music aficionados as he spun tracks under the moniker DJ Diesel.

The event kicked off in the early evening with heavy-hitting sets from up and coming producers Celo and Rated R, setting the mood and getting things started off just right. The show was barely an hour in and the mosh pits already began forming. I’ve said this before, but I don’t quite understand why mosh pits have begun forming over the last few years during dance music shows, but I digress. Bear Grillz and Ghengar followed with energy-filled performances that found each DJ standing on top of the decks and feeding off the crowd energy with every single bass drop. Every set pushed the limits of the speakers and subwoofers in the arena as fans headbanged along to every song and went nuts.

The energy was through the roof by the time the one and only Shaq stepped up to the plate and brought the house down with an hour-and-a-half set. “Where’s my mosh pit? I wanna see my fucking mosh pit,” he yelled into the microphone with a deep baritone voice, exuding energy that matched the subwoofer-busting songs he was spinning throughout the night. The Sacramento show of his current “Shaq Bass All Stars Tour” was somewhat of a homecoming, as the former Laker was recently named the general manager of the Sacramento State Hornet’s men’s basketball team. To celebrate the occasion, he was joined on stage by members of the team during the entire set, with the players running down to the barricade, taking photos and dishing out high-fives as the crowd threw down. Simultaneously, DJ Diesel worked the audience by bringing up select people to stand behind the DJ decks with him, grab selfies, and hang out.

It is clear that Shaq loves this music; it’s evident from his song selection, his stage presence, and his overall demeanor when switching between songs. We’re used to a world where celebrities are paid to do big club appearances, show up on stage for five minutes, and bounce. Not Shaq. There is a deep passion for dance music, particularly heavy bass music, and that passion was shone through all evening. You could feel it in the air. Pair that with the fireworks that suddenly erupted from the county fair next door, and you’ve got a recipe for a perfect summer concert evening. I feel like I’m going to have to check out a Hornets game now. See you all at Shaq State.
