You’d never guess that mgk (Machine Gun Kelly) had a care in the world outside of the stage. For nearly thirty songs, mgk and his powerhouse band played through a wide array of chart-topping songs at the Concord stop of his ‘Lost Americana’ tour on Saturday night.

mgk has become a genre chameleon as of late - his last album, Lost Americana, vacillates between pop and rock. His previous two releases - Mainstream Sellout and Tickets To My Downfall- catapulted him even further into the stratosphere with Warped Tour-ready pop-punk. Before that, he was a rapper. He can jump from being fully confident (“title track”, “Bad Mother Fucker”), to hopelessly in love (“bloody valentine”, “cliché), to downright existential (“play this when i’m gone”). Whether you love him or hate him, you have to admit that his career is interesting, and his tours always showcase that in the most entertaining way possible.

The show was opened by an up-and-coming rock act known as Beauty School Dropout. Not quite the kind of pop-punk that mgk fans would be used to on albums like Downfall and Sellout, the band ripped through a high-energy set that fit right in with the atmosphere of the evening. Main support was provided by mgk collaborator Wiz Khalifa. Every big hit from the hip-hop star was met with great energy from the crowd, as Khalifa powered through hit tracks like “Black and Yellow”. The “See You Again” rapper knows his crowd - inflatable blunts were passed around the crowd throughout his time on the stage. The vibes, as they say, were immaculate.

mgk’s stage setup is a wonderland of pyrotechnics and all the toys that a rockstar would need to put on a show of this scale. Fireworks, sparklers, and pyrotechnics lit up the night sky as he careened through a well-rehearsed set of tracks that spanned nearly his entire catalog. For a portion of the show, he performs with a mic stand that’s shaped like a cigarette (the nicotine imagery is all over the place; the logo for Lost Americana is an homage to Marlboro reds). It’s wildly entertaining to watch, whether he’s dancing, playing guitar, or rapping. He even threw it back to “2012 machine gun kelly” with a performance of the song “Wild Boy”. He eventually made his way out into the crowd for a few songs on a B-stage in the middle of the venue.

He might not be everybody’s cup of tea - lord knows that the Internet has had a lot to say about Colson Baker these last several years. But it is undeniable that mgk puts on one helluva show, and one that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you like it or not, he’s a rock star, through and through.
