Two words: controlled chaos. That’s the easiest way to describe rapper A$AP Rocky’s theatrical, genre-defying ‘Don’t Be Dumb’ Tour, which made its stop at San Francisco’s Chase Center yesterday evening. Two helicopters fly over the venue, flashing their floodlights on both the rockstar rapper and riot-like moshpit towards the back of the arena’s GA floor. Rocky runs around the stage screaming lyrics through a microphone disguised as a bullhorn. His theatricality is on full display, from the way he dresses, to the props and the actors he’s employed to bring songs from throughout his fifteen-year career to life. It was a wild and unforgettable evening.

A$AP Rocky is currently touring Don’t Be Dumb, the biggest and most eclectic album of his career, traipsing from genre to genre on a sprawling seventeen-song track list. Rocky’s tour setlist is just as varied, pulling in-your-face tracks from nearly every album in his catalog. He utilized every square inch of the arena, quite literally starting the show’s first three songs on the floor. As both the writer and the photographer that covered this show, we were instructed that we got to shoot the first three songs from the GA floor. We had the option to go into the mosh pit where he begins the show, at our own risk. Security guards dressed as SWAT team members surround him and try to hold back the chaos that is unfolding. People behind me were clawing for a chance to get even a glimpse of the rapper. There is something electrifying about him as a performer.

A brief interlude follows, and Rocky is suddenly atop one of the helicopters, being lowered onto the stage as the crowd gets even rowdier during “ORDER OF PROTECTION”, “HELICOPTER”, and “STOLE YA FLOW”. From here on out, A$AP Rocky took the Bay Area crowd through a career retrospective, even going all the way back to A$AP Mob (“Yamborghini High”, “Hella Hoes”, both of which featured verses from A$AP Twelvyy). There were specific moments when you could feel the crowd roar to life: Live.Love.A$AP’s “Purple Swag”, LONG.LIVE.A$AP’s “Fashion Killa” and “Fuckin Problems”, and even a brief venture into his verse on G Eazy’s “No Limit”. Some tracks were shortened, while others were played in their entirety.

Going past the venue curfew, A$AP Rocky finished the show on a raised platform, a crew of performers surrounding the base of it while fully concealing their identities. The theme of the tour and the Don’t Be Dumb album play into a dystopian, almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Banners that say the aforementioned catchphrase and “Big Brother Is Watching” adorn the stage. Fans are encouraged to disguise themselves with face masks, and many do. Art is a reflection of the environment in which we live, and the “Don’t Be Dumb” Tour manages to capture the energy of a crowd that wants to rise up, resist, and party all at the same time. Rocky is the ringleader, and there is no denying that he is an absolute bona fide rockstar.
