While Cardi B technically did a run of headlining shows back in 2019 to support her commercially successful and critically acclaimed debut album Invasion of Privacy, the world-famous rapper has never done a proper headlining tour until this year. Enter the “Little Miss Drama Tour”, which Cardi B brought to Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center last night, marking her first-ever performance in the City of Trees. To use the phrase “highly anticipated” would be putting it lightly - every seat in the home venue of the Sacramento Kings was packed to the brim with fans dressed up and ready to party well into the night.

With only two albums of material to pull from, Cardi B put on an incredibly theatrical, eccentric, and memorable performance, elevating above the general fare you’d see from a large-scale rap tour. Two video screens were positioned on either side of the stage, as a Steadicam followed Cardi and a large crew of dancers around the stage for a nearly forty-song performance filled with flair, attitude, and excitement. A large helping of pyrotechnics, flash bangs, and cryo tanks were used to punctuate heavy-hitting moments in songs throughout the evening.

The “Little Miss Drama” Tour has no opener, but DJ Ray G spent about a half hour warming up the Sacramento crowd with a helping of popular songs from the worlds of pop and hip-hop, from millennial favorites to Gen Z hits. A little after 8:30 PM, the lights in the venue went down as a roar of applause reverberated throughout the arena walls. Cardi B rose out of the stage to “Hello”, one of the opening numbers from her most recent album, Am I The Drama?, before dancers surrounded her and a burst of fireworks went off. From there, the show was split into six succinct and well-structured parts. The transitions ran a little long at times, but the song performances made up for it.

The second act featured Cardi walking down the arena catwalk and into a set-up that surrounded her like a cage while performing songs that packed more of an emotional punch like “Be Careful” and “Man of Your Word”, along with the sultry R&B-laced entry “On My Back”, which she finished by comedically yelling, “I’m horny!” to all in attendance. It is evident throughout the entire run of the show that Cardi is having a blast putting on a show like this, whether playing merengue-inspired hits (“Bodega Baddie”, “I Like It”) running through her catalog of features with artists like Bruno Mars (“Finesse”, “Please Me”), Maroon 5 (“Girls Like You”), Blueface (“Thotiana”), and G-Eazy (“No Limit”); or turning the stage into a Queens-inspired strip club (“Pretty & Petty”, “WAP”).

The sixth and final act of the show featured Cardi in what I can only describe as a futuristic-looking, diamond-studded full bodysuit, which adorned her as she played through a selection of features and crowd-pleasing hits like “Bartier Cardi”, “Outside”, and “Bodak Yellow”. Confetti rained down over the audience, with the show wrapping just a little after 10:30.

I don’t think it really matters if Cardi B is “the drama”. She’s vibrant, humorous, clearly having a great time, and looking sensational while doing it. The music is good, and as evidenced by last night’s Sacramento show, crowds are turning out in droves to see her. A tour like this one has shown that Cardi Bisn’t just another rapper, but a full-fledged artist with a vision that definitely gives fans in attendance their money’s worth.

Cardi B’s ‘Little Miss Drama’ Tour continues this Friday with a show at San Francisco’s Chase Center. Get tickets here.
