From Cradle To Stage: Stories From The Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars

A mother's love is special. It defies all odds, and it can never be broken. This statement rings true even when your son or daughter goes off to try and beat the odds in a career that involves long nights, little sleep, no financial stability, and no guarantees: being a professional musician and rockstar.

I am confident that there are hundreds of teenagers and adults in the same position as many of the musicians that are documented in this book, but this book doesn't really focus on them. Instead, author Virginia Grohl (mother of Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl) focuses on an interview subject that isn't always in the spotlight: the mothers of these rockstar. For a long period of time, Grohl traveled around the country visiting with the mothers of the biggest musicians in the world today, including Pharrell Williams, Geddy Lee of Rush, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, country vocalist Miranda Lambert, and Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave). Ms. Grohl tries to go as far back in their history as possible, telling the story of how they came to be where they are, and then further explores the relationship between the mother and their child when they were on the path to stardom.

Grohl's research and interviewing method reveals not only her dedication and connection to her subjects, but her passion for storytelling. In addition to providing stories about each mother she meets along the way, she includes a selection of vignettes that portray different moments of time throughout her son's career, including his time in Nirvana and his current time with Foo Fighters. It's a very personal book, and a unique look into the lives of those that we as music fans often seem to forget are there. Cradle To The Stage is an exemplary homage to the mothers of these musicians.
