America 51 - Book Review

America 51: A Probe Into The Realities That Are Hiding Inside "The Greatest Country In The World"
Author: Corey Taylor
Release Date: August 8, 2017
Publisher: De Capo Press

As I sit here thinking of what to write, a news headline pops up on my Facebook feed: President Trump Places Ban on Transgenders Serving in Military”. Oh, how I wish this book was still being written as this moment. I would have LOVED to have read this chapter.

Corey Taylor, simply put, does not give a fuck what you think about him. He unabashedly continues to put himself out there, laying waste to every Internet troll, bigot, racist, and just plain stupid person out there in the world. He did this in his previous book, You’re Making Me Hate You. This time around, it’s not personal: it’s political (okay, maybe it’s a bit personal).

Taylor, vocalist for hard rock act Stone Sour and heavy metal icons Slipknot, lays everything out on the table in America 51, his fourth overall novel, published by De Capo Press. With every release that Taylor brings, there are stories, straightforward view points, and no mincing of words. There’s even a good deal of humor included throughout his writings. But America 51 may be his most straightforward and brutally honest work yet. If you hadn’t guessed from the title, the book deals with Taylor’s views on the current state of American politics (spoiler alert: if you are a Trump supporter, I’ve got some bad news for you…he’s not on your side.)

A number of topics and situations are addressed throughout the book, including the state of politics in which Taylor grew up in and became accustomed to, the 2016 United States Presidential Election, and a number of his political views. While he is someone that openly veers to the “left” on the political spectrum, he’s not afraid to call out the problems that he believes those on the Democratic and liberal side of things have caused. He offers criticisms, while simultaneously offering his own ideas for solutions and plans that the party can incorporate in the future to fix things and be on the right side of history.

The bottom line is that the current political climate in the United States not the best. It’s true, and you’re living under a rock if you think that things are in the best shape that they can be right now. The problem is, there really hasn’t been someone that’s been outspoken enough to give their opinion on the reality of things, not as a politician, but as a hard-working, every-day citizen of these United States (albeit someone with a cooler day-job than most of us will ever have). Corey Taylor is clearly the person that is willing to bluntly state his views and the reality of the situation. There’s no sugar-coating and no pandering. Just truth.
